Ask Lucy on O2

So I’ve been scouring the internet for a release date for the Palm Pre since my helpful friend on Twitter announced it’s US launch. This morning O2 kindly confirmed it will be here in the UK in time for Christmas, no doubt with the intention of putting a serious dent in the sales of the iPhone 3GS.

So I go on the O2 site this morning to check the news and I notice they have taken a step back in time and launched a virutal help assistant called Lucy on there for some unknown reason. Like talking to a virtual person is in some way better than reading an FAQ.

So I asked ‘Lucy’ (apparently “Asking Lucy is the easiest way to get help online”) if there was any further news on the Palm release and here’s what I got:

Well she provided a reponse, whch is technically answering...

Well she provided a response, which is technically answering...

Aside from that being a complete lie (unless she’s got a Second Life account) it’s also complete bollocks. I don’t have anything against this kind of thing per se, it’s a bit cliched and tacky but at least take the time to make it useful before slapping it on your site. Schoolboy error.

I’d love to see some more Ask Lucy responses down here if anyone has any – especially if she answers your question correctly!

Update! Getting To Know Lucy – My Quest For A Virtual Date

I regularly scour the internet for girlfriends so getting to know Lucy seemed to be an ideal opportunity. Since she knows so little about O2 I thought I’d try a different line of enquiry…

Who Is Your Fiance?

As she already told me she was engaged (apparently happily but I don’t believe it) I pressed her for more details about her other half. She was tight lipped other than his name:

Paul eh?

Paul eh?

Do you have a dog?

I seemed to hit a frosty silence with other Paul questions so I changed tack – pets! A great conversation started…

Progress!

Progress!

After warming her up with those romantic overtures I decided to go in for the kill:

Let’s Mate?

You damn tease!

You damn tease!

Can I have your number?

Maybe that was a bit strong, I toned it down a little to see if I’d have more success.

That's her real number - dammit!

That's her real number - dammit!

Needless to say this did not leave me pleased, I resorted to insulting her before leaving, dignity intact:

F*ck you Lucy

F*ck you Lucy

I can’t believe she could resist but somehow she has, as well. The search continues…

    I liked this one.

    What is the time?

    You asked: “What is the time?”

    Our answer: My watch says it’s ${DateTimeFormat(Time(),”%h12:%nn %pp”)}, but I don’t know if you are in the same time zone.

    Gotta get me one of those watches.

    I also tried rephrasing your question and suddenly Lucy is boasting about herself

    Priceless

    You asked:
    Can you tell me when I can get a new palm pre?

    Our answer:
    We Virtual Assistants consider ourselves priceless.

    @Stephen Tallamy
    Well, first she gives you some mad ass time then reckons she’s priceless. I’m just not convinced she’s super helpful yet I’ll be honest…

  9. July 8th, 2009 at 12:51 | #9

    She gets a bit touchy if you start asking about her lady bits.

    You asked:
    Show us your t*ts

    Our answer:
    I’ll keep all of my bits, bytes and pieces to myself thank you.

    @aukseo
    It is clear that she is a total tease, all talk and no action. For all we know she might not even exist from the shoulders down – she might be like Bishop when he gets all f*cked up in Alien

    Its a TRAP!!!

    So far I’ve been able to get six different emotions from Lucy. Watch as she becomes more and more displeased with me:

    @Alex Craven

    @Yoshimi_s
    Knew I should have turned the time off on the comments!

    Alex is just jealous that he didn’t get to chat up Lucy first. Although then I would have avoided the embarassment of her rejection so maybe that would’ve been better…

    @stuartpturner back to the original reason you met Lucy, if you do want more info on the pre (because you know I’m as obsessed as you are) you can sign up for palm to notify you with new info http://www.palm.com/uk/en/products/phones/pre/
