Am I Really An SEO
Well as promised, I have come back to post something more substantial than “hello” now that the big move is all done. Yep that’s right I am now officially a Leeds SEO having finished moving at the weekend!
A discussion last week has had me thinking a lot about my role, what it includes and what it’s aims are. I had always thought of myself as an SEO, but now I’m not so sure. It’s quite obvious from from the name that SEO is about search engines, search engine optimisation, what else could it refer to? That creates a problem though, if I’m really an SEO then my goal is to increase search engine positions, and generate conversions (what ever they might be) for my clients. Is that really all you look at when you’re working with a client, because I know I do a hell of a lot more than that!
So what does my role include, below is a brief list, I’m sure many of you do far more than me, but off the top of my head the following seem to cover the majority of my role;
- improving search engine positions
- reputation management
- usability
- customer journey optimisation
- engaging in social media
- content creation
- generating off site referrals
Only one of those things is search engine optimisation. In which case it doesn’t seem like SEO is a very descriptive term for what I do. SEO’s have taken on these other roles because they are more closely aligned to what we do then they are to anything else, but they’re not really SEO.
I think a better term would be OOM, I quite like the idea of being an OOM, organic online marketing is a much more encompassing term for all of the pies I have fingers in, and I think is probably a much easier term for clients to understand. Even better than all of that though, if we were all to become known as OOM’s we would get to be named after this guy;
So what do you think, are you an SEO or an OOM?

Hi Sarah,
Great to see you blogging here.
Totally agree – I think that SEO’s have historically been pidgeon holed as techies – but it’s not really the case anymore.
Marketing is a discipline which more/most companies are familiar with – and as such OOM is probably a better way of describing what SEOs do. Gets my vote
Thanks Hannah, I’m thinking if we persevere we can get everyone converting to OOM!
I like it Sarah, it’s way better than SEM (which in my immensly childish mind still sounds a little dirty).
Coming from the marketing/ecommerce side I’m with you and Hannah her (i.e. not what Steve used to refer to as a ‘nim-nim’) and it’s very important to have an awareness of the commercial impact of your work in order to communicate its value to a client.
OOM badges anyone? I love a good badge.
@stuartpturner
I woudl so be up for OOM badges, can we leave that to your superior organisational skills?
Yeah, I’m in on this shout – not only do I agree entirely on principle, but we have a great chance to put ourselves at the heart of the OOM community by registering all the domains before the rest of them notice?
Already loving the catchy sound of ooMoz ..
@Matthew Oxley
If I go and check all of the OOM related domains will I find they have been snapped up and you’re now the proud owner of OOMroundtable, OOMjournal, OOMchicks and LeedsOOM Matthew?
@Matthew Oxley
ooMoz, brilliant!
It’s like the Northern YouMoz – it’s all coming together.
